Courtney Ward, R.N., a clinical nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), is the DAISY Award recipient. She was nominated for this honor by a parent and employee of JHACH, who wrote:

“My son was born at 28-weeks. Courtney was one of his primary nurses that took care of him during the first four days of his life. We quickly became attached to her. Being a nurse on 7 North doesn’t prepare you for this experience. We were so overwhelmed and terrified for our son, but Courtney took the time to explain every tube, line, alarm, and monitor. She provided reassurance and helped us understand what to expect next. Courtney encouraged us to participate in his care right away, taking temperatures and changing diapers. Despite my anxiety and fears, she helped me build the courage and confidence to do kangaroo care for the first time – staying in the room so I could relax and enjoy our time together. I shared footprint craft ideas that I dreamt of doing with him. During her next shift, Courtney came in with special markers and paper so we could do them together. I will forever cherish these keepsake footprints. Courtney played such an important role in his three month journey in the NICU. Her caring, compassionate and thoughtful nature meant everything to our family – it’s something we will never forget.”

Courtney’s manager added: “Courtney is an excellent nurse and strong patient advocate. She has been a primary nurse to many babies in our NICU – guiding them through their continuum of care. Courtney invests her love and attention, and provides expert knowledge which results in optimal outcomes. She adds a value like no other to our organization and NICU. Our team is extremely proud of her and this well-deserved award.”

Congratulations, Courtney, and thank you for your commitment to patient- and family-centered care.
