Jennifer Rykovich, R.N., a nurse in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), is the June 2017 Daisy Award recipient. The DAISY award is presented monthly to a Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital nurse who has provided extraordinary service to our patients.

A co-worker in the CVICU nominated Jen for this award, writing:

I had the privilege to work alongside Jen one day with a very complex cardiac ECMO* patient in the CVICU. Throughout the day, she exemplified an “above and beyond” work ethic. By chance, there were many procedures performed on this patient that day. Jen accepted these unexpected tasks and the associated challenges with a smile. She handled everything very calmly and professionally, and with sound clinical judgment. Our patient and the family were lucky to have a nurse like Jen. They received exceptional, compassionate care. I was impressed with her ability to take every unexpected hurdle in stride in order to provide the best care.

The CVICU leadership team commented:

The CVICU staff consistently recognize Jennifer for her compassion, teamwork, and patient advocacy. She comes to work every day with a smile and positive attitude. Jennifer goes above and beyond to meet the needs of her patient and families. Even in complex or stressful situations, Jennifer remains calm and professional at all times, ensuring the patient is her number-one. We thank Jennifer for her extraordinary care and raising the bar of nursing excellence.

*Cardiac ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) is a technology that uses a machine to take over the work of the lungs and heart, similar to the heart-lung bypass machine used during an open-heart surgery procedure.
