A smile and enthusiasm helped pave the way for Paula Simson to earn the distinction of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Volunteer of the Year. Consistent and reliable, her full attention is always on making things a little easier for patients and families. Bedside playtimes and walks outside of the room provide welcome distractions. Simson offers her support in any way she can, including getting to know the nurses on the Eighth floor where she spends her Friday afternoon assisting Child Life.

“Paula never hesitates to assist with training new volunteers on the unit and helping them to feel more comfortable in their role,” say nominators Katie Grabowski, M.S., CCLS, and Kelly Boyd, M.S., CCLS. “She is a natural teacher and makes others feel at ease.”

A volunteer at Johns Hopkins All Children’s since 1994, Simson is always ready to learn new things or pick up a shift for special events. In that time, she has given more than 3,500 hours to the hospital. She is also an active member of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Foundation Guild.

Fellow finalist Mark Harper also was thanked and honored for his dedicated service to the neonatal intensive care unit.

“From reading to patients to bringing coffee to parents, all you do allows our clinical staff to focus on providing high quality care and improve outcomes,” says Kimberly Berfield, vice president of government and community affairs at Johns Hopkins All Children’s, to the audience of volunteers. “We thank you for your giving hearts. You have my gratitude on behalf of the hospital.”

Volunteers at Johns Hopkins All Children's provide support every day to staff, patients and families. They visit with newborns, provide opportunities for play to patients of all ages, reassure parents and help out behind the scenes to help the hospital run more smoothly. We honor and appreciate their commitment every day and especially during Volunteer Recognition Week, which opened with the annual dinner.
