Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital opened a new Sports Therapy Center on Monday, July 3, at 3440 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Suite 208 in Tampa. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The Sports Therapy Center is a key component of the Sports Medicine Program at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and helps athletes return to play after injury. The center addresses injuries that occur among athletes involved in any sport including football, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, swimming and golf. A referral is required to make an appointment.
The Sports Therapy Center includes one-on-one sports injury assessment based on the child's physical and skeletal maturity, skill level and performance goals. It also includes individualized treatment to return the athlete to his or her sport in a healthy, competitive condition, prepared with the knowledge and skill to avoid re-injury. In addition, our expert team provides a personalized therapeutic exercise program designed to increase physical performance through improving flexibility, range of motion, strength, coordination and endurance.
The center’s primary focus is on physical therapy and orthopedic-based occupational therapy. The goals of therapy include improving overall function of affected extremity in order to return to previous skill level with gross motor, fine motor and self-care skills. The center also aims to decrease pain and improve range of motion, strength, dexterity, coordination and proprioception.
About the Team at Tampa Sports Therapy Center
The sports rehab team at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital is made up of physical therapists and occupational therapists who are experts not only in sports rehabilitation, but specifically pediatric sports rehabilitation. The team collaborates with the referring physician to maximize results. We specialize in the treatment of acute and chronic sports injuries, and address underlying areas of concern to prevent future injuries.
Why is Sports Rehabilitation Important?
Beginning therapy early allows the athlete to benefit from manual soft tissue and joint mobilization to decrease the initial pain and reduce inflammation of an injury. Treating sports injuries purely with medication and rest does not target the strength and skills required to return to a sport and decrease the risk of re-injury. Johns Hopkins All Children's Sports Rehabilitation blends our therapists' unique knowledge of orthopedics and pediatric growth and development along with a distinct knowledge of sport-specific demands. This combined sports rehabilitation approach is used to provide comprehensive care to the athlete from initial injury to return to sport.
How Do I Get Started at the Sports Therapy Center?
Request a prescription from your doctor for "Physical Therapy Evaluation and Treatment" or "Occupational Therapy Evaluation and Treatment" (for wrist and hand injuries). The evaluation and treatment will be provided by a physical or occupational therapist with specialized training and experience helping children and adolescents with sports injuries or orthopedic conditions. The Johns Hopkins All Children's Sports Rehabilitation team will provide care and treatment worthy of today's and tomorrow's top athletes.
