The relationship between Lakewood High School and the division of Government and Community Affairs at the hospital goes back years before the creation of the student-led Health Squad. However, it is this initiative that has brought the issue of teen health to the forefront of the community.
Janelle Garcia, Ph.D., unloads boxes of donated bread and pastries from her vehicle. It is the weekly delivery of baked goods to the school’s pantry. The students eagerly gather the items and bring them in for inventory ahead of the Friday afternoon food distribution.
“These kids are each other’s biggest champions and are always grateful,” Garcia says. “Seeing their compassion to each other always reminds me of why we do this.”
Celebrating a first birthday in the hospital isn’t ideal, but the Johns Hopkins All Children’s staff helps “Sea Bass” and his family have a special day.
As the vaccine comes to the frontline workers, a world of possibilities begins to open up.
For Gavin, the hospital isn’t all about challenges and adversity. It’s about giving joy to others.
