Janelle Garcia, Ph.D, center, clinical research coordinator with the Fit4Allkids program at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, helps students unload donated food at Lakewood High School for their food pantry.

4 years.

4,800 students.

160 peer-to-peer student health leaders.

A collaborative effort between Johns Hopkins All Children’s Fit4Allkids and school leaders to lead research in the field of teen obesity and weight management.

Monthly talks from resident physicians and workshops on nutrition, exercise and stress relief.

The only school-based food pantry in the area.

The relationship between Lakewood High School and the division of Government and Community Affairs at the hospital goes back years before the creation of the student-led Health Squad. However, it is this initiative that has brought the issue of teen health to the forefront of the community.

Janelle Garcia, Ph.D., unloads boxes of donated bread and pastries from her vehicle. It is the weekly delivery of baked goods to the school’s pantry. The students eagerly gather the items and bring them in for inventory ahead of the Friday afternoon food distribution.

“These kids are each other’s biggest champions and are always grateful,” Garcia says. “Seeing their compassion to each other always reminds me of why we do this.”
