Postdoctoral Fellowship

Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, offers 12-month postdoctoral fellowship positions in psychology:

  • Pediatric psychology, with a special focus on consultation-liaison and hematology/oncology
  • Pediatric psychology, with a special focus on consultation-liaison and eating disorders
  • Pediatric psychology with a special focus on consultation-liaison and pain psychology
  • Pediatric psychology with a special focus on hematology/oncology/BMT with an emphasis on PCIT in pediatric oncology
  • Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities

The psychology fellowship program is designed to provide clinical and research experiences necessary to support independent practice in pediatric and clinical child psychology and advanced training for a career within an academic medical or hospital setting.

Opportunities for supervisory experiences with psychology interns exist for both assessment and intervention. Fellows will have the opportunity to work with several supervisors to obtain hours necessary for licensure in Florida and will participate in scheduled didactics. There is an expectation for involvement in collaborative research. The requirement may be satisfied with an approved proposal for program development. Advanced training opportunities exist motivational interviewing, biofeedback, grant writing, and more. 

These positions are located in the Center for Behavioral Health within the Johns Hopkins All Children's Institute for Brain Protection Sciences.

Training programs in the Center for Behavioral Health at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital are designed to provide clinical and research experiences necessary to support independent practice in pediatric and clinical child psychology and advanced training for a career within an academic medical or hospital setting. Opportunities for supervisory experiences exist for both assessment and intervention.

Autism & Neurodevelopmental Disabilities

This program focuses on advanced training in early detection, differential diagnosis and evidence-based assessment and/or intervention for children with:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Intellectual disability
  • Developmental delay
  • Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Learning disorders
  • Disruptive behavior disorders
  • Language disorder
  • Internalizing disorders

Fellows will participate on a multidisciplinary evaluation team at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Autism Center and will have inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences. Additional opportunities include participating in interventions targeting core skill deficits such as behavioral parent training and group-based social skills training.

Pediatric Psychology–Hematology/Oncology/BMT, Consultation-Liaison

This program focuses on specialized training working with youth and their families experiencing a chronic and/or acute illness with a focus on evidence-based assessment and intervention. Common referrals for inpatient and outpatient services include:

  • Improving quality of life
  • Addressing concerns regarding treatment adherence
  • Diagnosing/treating psychological comorbidities
  • Facilitating adjustment/coping with illness
  • Evaluating medical trauma and acute anxiety

The position will include inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences within the two primary rotations (consultation-liaison and hematology/oncology) and the opportunity to become an integrated member on a multidisciplinary treatment team through minor rotations offered in several of the subspecialty medical clinics.

Pediatric Psychology Consultation-Liaison, Pain Psychology

This program focuses on advanced training in evidence-based practice for children, adolescents and their families living with chronic and/or acute illness with special focus on management of chronic pain.
 
This position includes inpatient, outpatient and multidisciplinary clinic experiences, including chronic pain program and wellness clinic. Specialized training in biofeedback is provided.

Pediatric Psychology Consultation-Liaison, Eating Disorders

This program focuses on advanced training in evidence-based practice for youth with illness and injury. In addition to working with diverse pediatric presentations on the general consult service, fellows receive specialized training in eating disorders. 

Fellows will gain clinical experiences inpatient, outpatient and within an interdisciplinary medical clinic. Opportunities for group therapy for ARFID and AN exist.

Pediatric Psychology - Hematology/oncology/bone marrow transplant with an emphasis on PCIT in pediatric oncology

The fellow selected for this program will join a grant-funded intervention evaluating cultural adaptations to PCIT in pediatric oncology. This fellow will engage in a variety of clinical and research activities. In addition to conducting PCIT intervention as part of the grant-funded study, clinical activities will include (1) a small hematology/oncology clinical case load of youth who are birth-22 years of age, and (2) engagement in multidisciplinary hematology/oncology outpatient clinics. The fellow will receive specialized training and eligibility for certification in PCIT as part of the grant-funded study. Additional opportunities will include grant-writing mentorship, hematology/oncology-specifc education and inpatient clinical work. 

Eligibility

Applicants from American Psychological Association (APA)- or Canadian Psychological Association (CPA)-accredited programs in:

  • Clinical
  • School
  • Counseling

Preference provided to those applicants with pediatric psychology/clinical child experience and an interest in working in a hospital-based setting.

Completion of an APA-accredited internship and all requirements for conferral of doctoral degree before start date is required. August start dates available.

Drug testing is mandatory for all individuals selected to internships and fellowships at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital.
