Study Design & Analysis

Overview

The Clinical and Translational Research Organization's (CTRO) Study Design and Analysis Core (SDAC) provides collaboration, consultation and services on study design and data analysis to investigators at All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine (ACH JHM), the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and their collaborators.

The primary objective of SDAC is to assist investigators at each stage of a study's lifecycle, including refining the research question, study design, mid-study evaluation and the analysis, interpretation and reporting of results. The services of the core are matched to the needs of each investigator and range from collaboration to routine service support to enhance the research efforts of investigators. The core also collaborates with the Database Management core to provide integrated and comprehensive support for clinical research.

Services

The services of the core are matched to the needs of each investigator, and range from collaboration to routine service support to enhance the research efforts of investigators. Specific types of support include, but are not limited to:

Protocol development and review

  • Research question: Help with refining and turning research questions into research studies
  • Study Design: Support in determining the most efficient and rigorous design for your study
  • Sample Size Estimation: Assistance with determining the appropriate sample size in order to have sufficient power to detect a clinically important difference
  • Randomization Schemes: Generate random numbers and randomization schemes for your study
  • Analysis Plan: It is important to have a clear statistical analysis plan for your data before the study is even conducted. We provide support for developing a suitable analysis plan for your protocol.
  • Protocol Review: Review a completed protocol to evaluate the appropriateness of the design, analysis plan and sample size

Analysis

  • Data Cleaning: We perform the necessary checks, including identifying outliers and questionable observations, to ensure the accuracy of the data
  • Statistical Analysis: We analyze your data using the appropriate statistical methods that will answer your research questions

Publication development and review

  • Abstracts/Manuscripts: We provide assistance with the writing of the methods, results and discussion sections of abstracts and manuscripts. We also help with the presentation of the results using appropriate tables, graphs and figures.

General statistical advice

  • You can also contact us with all other research design and analysis questions.
