Safety in Sports for Kids

Posted on Mar 02, 2018

Sports are a great way for kids to learn many things about competition, fairness, teambuilding, athleticism and more. But sports can also lead to short- and long-term injuries that can destroy careers and potential scholarships. Some tips, based on information at SafeKids.org, for staying safe in sports:

  • Whether it is required or not, make sure your child receives a physical examination before joining a sports team.
  • Become educated on any potential injury your child can face from that sport and weigh your options carefully.
  • Discuss how injuries are handled with coaches and have all medical information and phone numbers on hand at all times.
  • Talk candidly with your child about potential injuries and make sure they are aware of the risks they face in each sport.
  • Explain the importance to your child of proper warmup and hydrations throughout the game and discuss with the coach that this is part of the process.
  • Coaches should also be well aware of any medical conditions your child faces, such as asthma.
  • Make sure proper gear is worn at all times and know the risks and signs of concussion.
  • Teach your child to speak up in the event of a non-visible injury.
  • And of course, teach him or her the benefits of winning and of losing. Help your children to enjoy the sport without feeling the pressure of being a champion.
