Johns Hopkins All Children's HospitalPediatric RN Residency Frequently Asked Questions
-
Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital (JHACH) is a 259-bed freestanding pediatric hospital based in St. Petersburg, Florida. We are a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine and a leader in children’s health care, combining a legacy of compassionate care focused solely on children since 1926 with the innovation and experience of one of the world’s leading health care systems. With more than half of our 259 beds devoted to intensive care level services, we are the regional pediatric referral center for Florida's West Coast. Our motto defines our mission - "all we do. all for kids."
Since its initial Magnet designation in 2019, JHACH has received a number of awards and accolades:
- U.S. News & World Report ranked JHACH as the number one pediatric hospital in the state of Florida for 2024-2025, a designation we achieved the past 4 out of 5 years.
- Newsweek magazine recognized JHACH as a Best Specialized Hospitals 2025 - Pediatrics. We were listed as #41 in the world.
- The American College of Surgeons designated JHACH as a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center in 2022, an honor awarded to only two other hospitals in Florida and fewer than 50 around the nation.
- Leapfrog Group named JHACH as one of only eight “Top Children’s Hospitals” in the country for patient safety and quality in 2024.
Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital has a strong tradition for hiring new graduate nurses. In fact, hiring, training, and molding new graduate nurses is embedded into our culture. We hire directly into all of our inpatient areas, the Emergency Center, and Operating Room, and we continue to hire RN Residents directly into our critical care areas. Our RN Residents are hired into cohorts and journey through the RN Residency with the support of these peers.
Our 12-month RN Residency Program includes cohort classes, preceptor-led orientation to the unit of hire, specialty-specific education and training, and shadow opportunities to other departments and disciplines. In addition, we offer a Peer Advisor Program, Self-Care Program, and Clinical Debriefings during cohort class time to provide a strong foundation for our RN Residents.
Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital has an established Professional Development Nurse Mentor Program, Peer Advisor Program, and the ELITE Preceptor Program. Each of these programs play an essential role in the success of our RN Residents.
Support for the RN Residency Program is widespread in our organization. The Transition to Practice Advisory Group, chaired by the Program Director, oversees all aspects of the RN Residency Program. The Advisory Group is comprised of program stakeholders who meet on a regular basis to discuss RN Residency topics, evaluate the program, and revise the program as needed. These stakeholders include the Chief Nursing Officer, Executive Nursing Directors, Clinical Managers, Nursing Professional Development Specialists, and Talent Acquisition. There is also representation from previous RN Residents, preceptors, and mentors.
Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital is a proud supporter of new graduate nurses. We are excited to continue this journey of accreditation through the Practice Transition Accreditation Program.
