About

Dr. Sosa was named medical director of Johns Hopkins All Children’s International Patient Services in 2013 after nearly 40 years as the leader of the hospital’s regional neonatology program. He has helped develop medical education and research projects in Latin America, including his native Guatemala, and participates in international conferences to provide education and foster clinical relationships with children’s health providers around the globe.

Dr. Sosa founded the hospital’s neonatology program in 1976, opening a new neonatal intensive care unit the following year and achieving state of Florida certification as a Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center. While serving as medical director of neonatology from 1976 through 2013, he led the program’s growth to include a 97-bed neonatal intensive care unit (American Academy of Pediatric Level IV) on the main Johns Hopkins All Children’s campus in St. Petersburg, as well as a team of experienced neonatologists who manage the care of high-risk newborns at community hospitals across west-central Florida. He also was cofounder of the hospital’s Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Training Program one of the first in the state of Florida.

In addition, Dr. Sosa served for more than a decade as president of All Children’s Specialty Physicians, a multispecialty practice group that is part of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s health system and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Foundation. In 2007, he was the recipient of the William Belcher Award, the highest honor the Foundation bestows.

Dr. Sosa completed a neonatology/research fellowship at Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Institute of Nutrition For Central America and Panama in Guatemala. He served on the faculty of the University of South Florida College of Medicine before joining the neonatology program at All Children’s Hospital (now Johns Hopkins All Children’s) in 1976.
