Spiritual Care

The Spiritual Care program at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital has been dedicated to offering spiritual support to patients, families and staff for more than 30 years. The Spiritual Care team can provide support while honoring your family’s religious traditions. If you would like, we can encourage a religious leader of your choice to visit you at the hospital.

Talking with a chaplain can be especially helpful in emergencies, at a turning point when it may be time to reconsider treatment options or with bereavement issues. Spiritual Care program members also help families explore medical ethics issues with our Advisory Committee on Human Values & Ethics or the Institutional Review Board.

Chaplains offer a caring presence in a challenging time by:

  • Providing encouragement and a calm presence around a time of concern or crisis.
  • Praying with you and for you.
  • Offering a listening ear and reflective conversation.
  • Arranging for rites and rituals of your particular faith community.
  • Offering bereavement support in or around the time of crisis or end of life.
  • Discussing concerns during your hospital stay.
  • Helping the family understand the child’s illness.
  • Providing Sabbath candles, prayer rugs, books, a Bible, or other religious, spiritual, devotional or inspirational items.
  • Weekly Prayer Services at 11:45 a.m. every Wednesday.
  • Weekly Worship Services at 4 p.m. every Sunday. ‚Ä®

Our Spiritual Care team provides spiritual and emotional support to hospital staff by:

  • Performing spiritual rituals such as Ash Wednesdays and blessing of hands during Nurses Week.
  • Providing memorial services and bereavements.
  • Providing invocations such as during employee annual banquets and Thanksgiving meals.
  • Facilitating staff debriefings.
